MIKE CARROLL
interview: Justin Goldposted: May 4, 2007
Birthplace? Kaiser, Geary Street, San Francisco.
Nicknames? Nerd, Bubbles, Bubz, Malakai.
What did you think of Daewon winning this year’s SOTY? I thought, “Fuck yeah!” He deserves it. He’s one of the illest skaters ever and he’s showing the rest of the world that he’s more than just school yards. I’m glad that a lot more people are able to see how raw he really is, because I’ve always tripped off of him.
Is there a bond/brotherhood between all the past SOTY winners? I’m sworn to secrecy.
So what’s the story behind the Skate Goat shoe? The idea for this project was to do something different for Lakai. We’ve done so many co-brands with board companies already, so I really wanted to think of a new approach when I started working on this shoe. Every time I did, Thrasher was the only idea that kept popping into my head. As a little kid, Fausto always had my back, and that support never went away. When we started our companies, nobody encouraged us the way Fausto did. A lot of industry goofs did their best to cockblock us, but not Fausto. He was down, and he always let us know that. If it wasn’t for this collaboration, I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to talk to him and thank him for all he did for me, my companies, and skateboarding before he passed. I proudly dedicate this shoe to Fausto Vitello and skateboarding.
Do you have a story from King of the Road that didn’t make the mag or video? It’s all a blur. I feel like anything worth talking about came out.
Who do you think would be the ultimate Mystery Guest? Phelps or Dave Chapelle.
What’s the worst thing you’ve been asked to do in skateboarding? I can’t really think of lame shit that has been asked of me in skateboarding. It all comes with the territory. Unless you get yourself involved with some corporate type sponsor; I could see them asking some lame shit. But then again, that comes with the territory, also.
Are you working on any other projects right now? I guess I’m working on The Lakai video. The new EA SKATE video game. I’ve also been throwing up a couple of photos on
